"We're all born naked and the rest is drag." -RuPaul Charles

πŸ‘©πŸ»β€πŸŽ€ Course Description

IIn this course, students will learn about drag culture and how it became popular in American society. We will begin with the recent history of the LGBTQ+ community in America and discuss how widespread access to the community has changed public perspectives. Additionally, we will explore how the internal and external conversations surrounding drag have developed through different social media platforms. We will also examine the cultural and political significance of drag as an art form and the impact of popular drag-driven television shows such as RuPaul’s Drag Race (2009-) and Pose (2018-). The course will also open discussions on the rise of drag culture in the context of race, ethnicity, and gender disparity in modern America. To explore these concerns, we will look at topics such as systemic racism, homophobia, transphobia, and misogyny both within and outside the LGBTQ+ community. We will look at theories of gender and collaboratively apply them to media portrayals of drag. As a community, we will have in-depth, peer-led, challenging discussions with the goal of recognizing the relevance of drag culture. Students will also choose topics that interest them, conduct research, and share their findings with the class

Original Syllabus

At first, we started with the syllabus we created over winter break. We found materials on YouTube, Hulu, Netflix, and the library to create homework assignments. However, even starting the first week over Zoom, we quickly realized we had to make some adjustments. Below is the updated syllabus of what we actually did during our weeks together. You can find the week-by-week breakdown of assignments, examples of student work, full videos or trailers, and other fun stuff below!
